Former Afghan captain representing Afghan athletes in traditional Loya Jirga

Former Afghan cricket captain Raees Ahmadzai is among over 2000 dignitaries of Afghan traditional Loya Jirga held in capital Kabul 16th – 19th of November 2011.

A Loya Jirga, or grand assembly, is a thousands-year-old democratic process of a traditional meeting that serves to bring local leaders from all over the country together to discuss a critical issue during a time of instability.

In this edition of the Loya Jirga, 16 various categories from different groups of society are participating. The group of Athletes are one of the 16 categories.

Raees Ahmadzai, the former captain and Afghanistan's goodwill ambassador to the UN is representing Afghan athletes.
On the inaugural day of the Jirga Wednesday November the 16th, Ahmadzai expressed his take and assessment in a brief note sent to BBC-Pashto.

“Today was an historic day of my life. I am also given a tiny part and opportunity to talk about the future of Afghanistan. May god gives us the strength to do something better so that future generations remember and pray for us” He added “when we stood for the honour of the national anthem, I recalled the days when I stood for the national anthem of Afghanistan during the World Cup games where I considered myself very fortunate. Today, the moments of the national anthem also made me feel very proud”
