The Afghan team will be participating in the tournament along with the three Asian cricket powers India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and the host Maldives well also feature in the tournament
"The SAARC Twenty20 cup targeted at Under 25 teams from the 8 countries aims to build on the interest for the game, and achieve greater contact between the SAARC Member States through sports. The youth plays an important role in fostering SAARC ideals, and this event will provide a unique opportunity for them to come together and share their experiences and hopes, for the future growth of the region through sports" says the official site of Maldives Cricket.
The tournament is a sideline activity of SAARC Summit and is scheduled to take place from 30 Oct. to 8 November. The tournament will be played at the purpose built stadium on the beautiful island of Fuvahmulah in the Southern Province Addu Atoll. All heads of SAARC member states, including President Karzai, will be watching the players from the sideline.
Rumors say Afghanistan will be sending following squad to the tournament: Hamid Hassan, Mohammad Nabi(captain), M. Shahzad, Mirwais Ashraf, Gulbadin Naib, Samiullah Shinwari, Dawlat Zadran, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Stanikzai, Nasir Jamal, Najibullah Zadran, Amir Mangal, Fazel Zazai and Nawab Khan
The side will be coached by either Raees or Dawlat Ahmadzai

Yes they can, a world cup qualifying tournament will take place in the UAE early next year. 16 teams will participate in it and the top 2 teams will be granted a place in the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
