Fresh Faces In Afghanistan line-up

Afghanistan Cricket Board Monday, after the domestic match between Kabul and Kunar announced its squad for the ICC Pepsi World Cricket League Division One. The selection committee of Afghan Cricket Board which consists of Hamid Shinwari, Asadullah, Haji Ahmad Shah and Saeed Nazeem has has named their squad featuring a number of new faces.

The 15-man squad features three so far uncapped players; Murad Ali, Aftab Alam and Javed Ahmadi (both have represented Afghanistan in the Under 19 World Cup), another name in the squad which sparks memories of the World Cup Qualifiers is Khaleq Dad Noori, given his performance in the World Cup Qualifiers its hardly as surprising, but one is bewildered why he hasn't been given a chance lately, Perhaps its now chance for him to concrete his place in the squad. Recent push to develop and refine more youngsters have undoubtedly helped push these youngsters into blue jerseys. As a result even the reserves list has been upgraded to youth; the list includes U-19 capitain Noorulhaq Malikzai (who strangely has been degraded behind Javed Ahmadi and Murad Ali) Nasratullah Nusrat, Izatullah Dawlatzai and young Hamza Hotak. An other sad fact to wonder about for Afghans most be the fact that two of Afghanistan best youth players Hasmatullah Shahidi and Najeeb Zadran has even not been considered for team.

Experienced middle-order batsman Raees Ahmadzai recently announced his availability for 50-overs cricket but much to his surprise was strangely not included in the squad as was the case with the experienced opening bowler Dawlat Ahmadzai who took the first wicket against India during the T20 world cup. Amongst those staggered players is also youngster Shafiqullah Shafiq. The squad has more than its fair share of surprises, although a good mix of both experienced and youth are included but will it prove to be a balanced squad?. Certainly this tournament will be a challenge as well as a genuine indication of future talent.

In other team updates, Mirwais Ashraf has replaced Mohammad Nabi as vice-captain without any rationale explanation, Nabi's sound performance in the recent T20 World Cup maybe a reason but their wasn't anything to to dither his position. Perhaps the selectors have seen some superior so far untapped leadership qualities in Ashraf.

Along with Afghanistan, Canada, Kenya, Ireland, the Netherlands and Scotland will also be competing in the 50-over World Cricket League Division One. All matches will have ODI status. Afghanistan's first game will be against Canada on July the 1st. Afgric will resort to all means possible to provide a web-cast of all the matches from the Netherlands on this website.

The squad is as follows:
1. Noor Ali
2. Karim Sadiq
3. Mohammad Shahzad
4. Nowrooz Mangal (C)
5. Asghar Stanakzai
6. Mohammad Nabi
7. Shabir Noori
8. Murad Ali
9. Javed Ahmadi
10. Hameed Hasan
11. Shahpoor Zadran
12. Khalid Dad Noori
13. Mirwais Ashraf (VC)
14. Aftab Alam
15. Samiullah Shinwari
